Louisiana Hummingbirds

The Krewe

As almost anyone who was raised, or has spent much time, in south Louisiana knows, "krewe" is the term used for Mardi Gras associations, groups of folks who work together to put on a Mardi Gras parade, a ball, or both.

After an off-hand comment that our team of assistants looks like a "crew" of workers setting up the banding traps, etc., we adopted the term (in its Louisiana/Mardi Gras form) to describe those of us who work together on this project.

The Louisiana Winter Hummingbird Project is actually a joint effort of several banders in Louisiana. These banders work independently from Nancy's team, but share their results to produce a better overall picture of the hummingbirds wintering in the state.

Dave Patton bands in the Lafayette area and across Acadiana, as far east as Baton Rouge. He holds a Master Permit for hummingbird banding from the Bird Banding Laboratory. He is also an accomplished photographer and avid birder.

Linda Beall bands primarily in the Florida Parishes, especially St. Tammany, ranging as far west as Baton Rouge. She also holds a Master Permit for hummingbird banding from the Bird Banding Laboratory.

Paul Dickson monitors and bands those hummingbirds which occasionally winter in north Louisiana, especially in the Shreveport area. He is a subpermittee bander working under Nancy's permit.
